Employee Lifetime Value, Pt.1

What is the value of an employee to an organisation over their lifetime with that organisation, and how do you quantify it? One would hope it’s more than what you pay them? Enter the “employee lifetime value curve”. It’s not a new concept in the world of HR, but I was interested in seeing how the Communic8 platform improves that curve for the benefit of the organisation.

Quantifying Value

A big part of what we do at Communic8 is help organisations around the world get more value from their employees.

How is this done?

Think about it, organisations undergo constant change, whether it be during periods of digital adoption (think new ERP software), when absorbing or being absorbed by another organisation (think M&A), or when implementing new processes and procedures.

I was recently researching the concept of employee lifetime value. What is the value of an employee to an organisation over their lifetime with that organisation, and how do you quantify it? One would hope it’s more than what you pay them? Enter the “employee lifetime value curve”. It’s not a new concept in the world of HR, but I was interested in seeing how the Communic8 platform improves that curve for the benefit of the organisation.



The Formula

As you can see in the graphic above, the lifetime value of any particular employee within your organisation may be represented by a calculation where:

  • “A” represents your initial recruitment, onboarding and training costs,
  • “B” represents the period of time where your employee delivers value to your organisation, and
  • “C” represents the cost of offboarding your employee, and potentially, the ongoing costs to your organisation if that employee speaks badly of their experiences. Here’s the formula:

Based on the formula above, we want to maximise “B”, and minimise “A” and “C”.
